I’m the ultimate oatmeal fan, there’s no question about that. In case you missed my “What I Eat in a Day” post, I actually eat oatmeal for dinner most nights. My Instagram is peppered with oatmeal photos, and even savory oatmeal (gasp!) has made an appearance recently. I’m basically a crazy oatmeal lady, and I’m okay with it!
So, imagine my delight when I had the opportunity to create my OWN custom oatmeal. True Nutrition has a product called MyOatmeal, a personalized blend of all the oats, mix-ins, and flavorings your heart desires. True Nutrition did provide me with free product to sample, although I was under no obligation to share my opinions and this is not a sponsored post. I thought it was such a fun concept that I just had to share with all my fellow oatmeal lovers out there!
Each bowl of my “Tolerant Tummy Morning Mix” oatmeal (made with 3/4 cup dry oats) has 320 calories, 18 grams of protein, and 6 grams of fiber, not counting toppings. Um. Yes please! I’m dishing all the details on how I created my blend, the pros/cons of customized oatmeal, and my thoughts on who might benefit the most from this nifty product!
How it Works
I started off with the “oatmeal generator” (love it), which can be found here. This is a snapshot of what the order screen looks like:
There’s a long list of possible oatmeal flavors, sweeteners, and mix-ins including dried fruit, nuts, and even protein powders. The Nutrition Facts label and price total update automatically as you add and subtract each item.
Here’s how I created my blend:
- Select oats type (old-fashioned, quick, steel cut, gluten-free, etc).
- Pick a sweetener if you’d like (Stevia, coconut sugar, monk fruit, etc).
- Decide if you want a flavor (vanilla, blueberry, cinnamon roll, etc).
- Choose your mix-in’s and — the cool part — select “light”, “medium”, or “heavy”.
- Select the quantity (1-100lb).
- Name it!
There’s also a list of dozens of pre-planned “Popular Mixes” to choose from such as Cinnamon Raisin Banana Chip Crisp or Fresh Baked Apple Cinnamon, if you need inspiration.
MyOatmeal Blend
My “Tolerant Tummy Morning Mix” is a mix of:
- Organic old-fashioned oats
- Natural vanilla bean flavor
- No sweetener
- Organic coconut chips (light)
- Organic hemp seeds
- Pea protein isolate (light)
I cook my oats on the stove top with half water, half almond milk and they are DE-licious! With just a hint of vanilla and a nice crunch from the coconut chips, they are so flavorful and creamy that I don’t even taste the protein powder at all. I was initially hesitant about adding a “flavor” to my oats, but the natural vanilla bean flavor is super subtle. I’ve been topping my bowl with sliced banana, cinnamon, and a drizzle of maple syrup for just a touch of sweetness.
The protein content is another major bonus- 18 grams of (tasteless) protein per bowl is a serious win-win situation if you ask me!
My Thoughts
Overall: cool concept, boundless options, and pretty convenient that it arrives ready to go on your doorstep.
Advantages:
- Saves time and energy
- Unlimited potential for different flavor and texture combinations
- Fun way to try new ingredients without committing to a bulk purchase
Disadvantages:
- More expensive than making oatmeal from scratch (mostly due to $3.99 in shipping)
- All toppings have to be cooked along with your oats, since they’re mixed in together
I think MyOatmeal would be perfect for those who:
- Travel frequently
- Have limited time to shop for or prepare meals at home
- Want to try out specialty ingredients (like monk fruit sweetener, chia seeds or hemp seeds) in their oatmeal without having to purchase an entire package
- Need a fun and unusual gift idea for an oatmeal aficionado (yes, there’s definitely such a thing!)
A premade oatmeal mix like this would be great on the go. Find a hotel microwave and you’re set for the morning!
I also think I may put this custom oatmeal on my list of “gifts to give new moms” because 1) oats are thought to boost milk supply, and 2) ain’t nobody got time to make themselves fancy oatmeal when there’s a newborn in the house! A sweet, thoughtful, and kinda fancy gift for a friend in need. I’m thinking something like “Sarah’s Survival Mix” would be the perfect name 😉
Let me know if y’all try it out, I’d love to hear what blends you come up with! (P.S. This is not an affiliate link!)
